An Eritrean in Ethiopia: Teddy Love’s story

Written by Richard Mallett, Jessica Hagen-Zanker, Clare Cummings

Every month, thousands of Eritreans flee their country for reasons including political persecution, indefinite military conscription and limited job opportunities.

Many travel directly to neighbouring Ethiopia – but once there, how do they settle down and provide for their families?

This film, released to coincide with the publication of new research by the Overseas Development Institute, focuses on Eritrean singer Teddy Love, who fled his home after refusing to sing the government’s propaganda.

It investigates how Eritrean refugees try to settle in Ethiopia and what makes them want to continue their journey, often via dangerous routes.
