Description

Increasing attention is being paid to measuring the macro impact of development finance institutions (DFIs) on employment and structural change. DFIs have long examined the direct employment creation impact of their operations, but there have been challenges in estimating their indirect/induced/second round/dynamic effects.

Several events, initiatives and studies are now contributing to an enhanced understanding of these indirect impacts. Among these, ODI has undertaken two studies, building on several other pieces we have published on the impact of DFIs over the last decade.

This roundtable brought together key stakeholders to discuss recent findings, in the light of other studies and DFI’s own work and make progress in working on next steps.

The roundtable also highlighted two other studies: one commissioned by the Private Infrastructure Development Group (PIDG) and a job study from the IFC.

The objectives of the workshop were to:

  • understand the impact of DFIs on jobs and structural transformation
  • share knowledge amongst practitioners and experts
  • help map a way forward on measuring impacts.
