The term ‘sustainable agriculture’ (SA) is associated with a wide range of interpretations and visions. It is used to describe a broad set of principles for agricultural development as well as to distinguish specific technological innovations. This key sheet reviews the origins of the term, the evolution of its application,
some of the types of technology associated with sustainable agriculture, and challenges related to operationalising sustainability.
