This study seeks to explore the relationships between globalisation and education and training through an examination of certain transnational corporations, operating in one sector in a specific country. Through an examination of skills development within the South African automotive industry (focusing particularly on the cases of DaimlerChrysler South Africa and BMW South Africa) I seek to shed further light on the broader debate on the relationship between globalisation and education and training. It is intended that this largely sociological study located in a particular context can provide a useful companion to the global study of te Velde, which is argued primarily from the disciplinary position of a development economist.
