G20 subsidies to oil, gas and coal production: Canada

Research report

Written by Shelagh Whitley

Research report

This country study and accompanying data sheet compiles publicly available information on fossil fuel production subsidies in Canada in 2013 and 2014. It is a background paper to the report Empty promises: G20 subsidies to oil, gas and coal production and provides a baseline to track progress on the phase-out of such subsidies as part of a wider global energy transition.

January 25 2018: A few formula corrections were made to the Excel data sheet after the original publication date (November 2015). Accordingly, the 2014 estimate for total tax expenditures was corrected to USD 1,176 million. The 2013 and 2014 estimates for total direct spending were corrected to USD 216 million and USD 200 million, respectively. The grand total of national subsidies for 2013 and 2014 were therefore corrected to USD 2,913 million and USD 1,376 million. The annual averages were already accurate and therefore remain unchanged, and the country brief also remains unchanged.
