Aerial Photographs and Thematic Maps for Social Forestry

Research reports

Aerial photographs and thematic maps (large-scale cartographic maps) can be useful tools for assessing farmers' use and perceptions of their environments. This paper reported trials of the two tools in two villages in Java, Indonesia. Aerial photographs were considered the more useful because of their accuracy and detail, but both tools were valuable only in the context of good interviewing technique on the part of the researcher. Younger men interpreted the photographs and maps more easily than older men.
