Richard Carter has worked in the natural science, engineering and management aspects of water, sanitation and hygiene since the mid-1970s. His work has focused especially on groundwater resources, water conservation, rural water services, farmer-managed irrigation, and sanitation and hygiene. His geographical focus has been sub-Saharan Africa, but with some work also in south and south-east Asia.

Richard's main periods of employment have been at Cranfield University, where he initiated the university’s MSc course in Community Water and Sanitation, and was appointed to Professor of International Water Development; at WaterAid, where he headed the Technical Support Unit; and as Director of his own consultancy firm Richard Carter and Associates Ltd.
