Olena Borodyna

Olena Borodyna is a Senior Geopolitical Risks Advisor in the Global Risks and Resilience programme. Her work spans research and advisory on managing geopolitical and low-carbon transition risks and opportunities impacting businesses and investment in the context of multiple global threats. She has experience delivering research and advising on (geo)political, climate and ESG-related risks in infrastructure, energy, and mining sectors across Asia and Africa, and she has looked extensively at Chinese overseas investment and engagement.

Olena's current research is on the geopolitics of critical minerals and energy, including the role of hydrogen; understanding cascading impacts of climate and geopolitical risks on supply chains; and risks and opportunities to Ukraine’s reconstruction.

She has previously worked in business intelligence and renewable energy. In her role as policy advisor, she supported the UK Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy and the Department for Transport with the standards and business models for low-carbon hydrogen and sustainable aviation fuels through advisory services.

She holds an MA in Geopolitics, Territory and Security from King’s College London and BA in Chinese and History from SOAS, University of London. Olena is fluent in Mandarin Chinese, Ukrainian and Russian, and is learning Spanish and Arabic. She is studying towards the Sustainability and Climate Risk Certificate with the Global Association of Risk Professionals.
