Portrait of Joe Studwell

Joe Studwell is a Visiting Research Fellow at ODI. Joe is the author of three books on east Asian development, most recently 'How Asia Works'. Joe’s works have appeared on Books of the Year lists in publications including The Financial Times, The Economist, and the Asian Wall Street Journal.

Bill Gates has described How Asia Works as one of his favourite texts on economic development, saying that the book ‘does a better job than anything else I’ve read of articulating the key role of agriculture in development.’ Joe recently submitted a PhD thesis to the University of Cambridge Judge Business School. The thesis, ‘From learning to earning: the transition from manufacturing catch-up to competitiveness at the global business frontier, as pursued in China’s energy equipment sector’, will subsequently be published as an academic book.
