Anna McCord works on social protection policy and programme design, impact appraisal and evaluation, and specialises in public works programmes and political economy analysis. She is a sociologist with a PhD in economics, and 30 years experience in international development. Anna has experience throughout north and sub-Saharan Africa, as well as Asia and MENA, having worked closely with a range of major donors, UN agencies, governments and non governmental agencies. Anna is currently leading research and advisory work on the role of PWP as a response to the socio-economic crisis induced by C-19, and its links to climate change, working with DFAT, the ILO, WFP and the World Bank.

Anna McCord is a sociologist (Cambridge University) with a PhD in economics (University of Cape Town), and 30 years experience in international development in the INGO sector, consultancy and academe, including programme design, implementation and evaluation as well as policy development and advocacy. She uses a cross disciplinary approach incorporating qualitative and quantitative methods drawn from both anthropology and economics. Anna currently works as a research economist specialising in social protection policy and programme design, impact appraisal and evaluation with a particular interest in i) public employment programmes, ii) rethinking evaluation methodology and ii) the political economy of social policy interventions at international and national levels.

She has experience throughout north and sub-Saharan Africa, as well as central, southern and south eastern Asia, working for the major bi and multilateral donors active in social protection as well as UN agencies (FAO, IFAD, ILO, UNICEF and WFP), governments and non governmental agencies. She has published widely in a variety of media and taught extensively on social protection, public works, labour markets, political economy, and shock responsive social protection, having carried out the initial conceptual work on SRSP. Anna is currently leading research and advisory work on the role of PWP as a response to the socio-economic crisis induced by C-19, and its links to climate change, working with DFAT, GIZ, the ILO, WFP and the World Bank.
