Portrait of Andy Carl

Andy is a Research Associate in the Politics and Governance programme. He is currently working as an independent adviser and researcher on peacebuilding. He is an Honorary Fellow at the University of Edinburgh’s School of Law where he is a Senior Advisor to the Political Settlement Research Project.

He is also a Senior Advisor to the Inclusive Peace and Transition Initiative at the Graduate Institute in Geneva, a member of the Council of Experts at the Democratic Progress Institute in London, and a Visiting Fellow at Coventry University’s Centre for Trust, Peace and Social Relations. He is a member of the board of Impunity Watch in Utrecht, Netherlands and the Rift Valley Institute in Nairobi, Kenya.

As the first member of staff and Programme Director, he helped Martin Ennals, the founding Secretary General, establish International Alert in 1989. There he developed the organization’s programme methodologies and led their engagements in South Africa, the Philippines, Liberia, Fiji, Colombia and elsewhere. In 1994, he co-founded Conciliation Resources where he was Executive Director for twenty-two years. There he established the Accord publication series and led the organisation to become one of the leading non-profit organisations in the field.

He is currently leading on the development of the Pax Spiral initiative which seeks to address the global challenge that organizations working for the shared goal of ending a violent conflict and building peace too often fall short of realising their collective and cumulative capabilities and impacts. Pax Spiral is exploring new methods to help unblock imperfect cooperation and communications and less than ideal inter-organizational relations that have significant negative impacts and unlock shared organizational and leadership potentials to build long-term peace.

He also co-curates the news and information stream Peace Talks.
