Amina Khan is Senior Research Officer at the Equity and Social Policy Programme. As an international development policy researcher since 2009, she has written mainly on poverty and inclusive growth, urbanisation, and several cross-cutting themes relating to the Sustainable Development Goals. She is now creating a body of work on ‘poverty in emergencies’ and is focusing on ‘reaching the furthest behind’. Her strengths include applying a multidisciplinary analytical lens to quantitative and qualitative research methods. She works mainly on sub-Saharan Africa, Asia and the Middle East.

She is now creating a body of work on ‘poverty in emergencies’ and is focusing on ‘reaching the furthest behind first’. Her strengths include applying a multidisciplinary analytical lens to quantitative and qualitative research methods. She works mainly on sub-Saharan Africa, Asia and the Middle East. Groups of interest include children, youth, slum-dwellers, refugees and internally displaced populations.

Amina has led and managed several research projects at ODI. Among others, these included managing a large-scale research project on ‘education in emergencies’, and undertaking qualitative primary research on Ethiopia, Chad, Iraq and the DRC; child poverty studies on Tanzania; and studies on the macro political economy and skills development in Pakistan, the global labour force and cities’ likely progress on the SDGs.

Prior to joining ODI in 2014, Amina served as Senior Research Fellow at the Mahbub ul Haq Human Development Centre, a think tank focused on human development challenges in South Asia.

She holds (with distinctions) an MSc in Foreign Service from Georgetown University (international development specialisation), and a BSc (with honours) in Economics from the Lahore University of Management Sciences. She is a former Fulbright Scholar and has advanced proficiency in English, French, Urdu, Hindi and Bengali.
