A leading expert on the humanitarian crisis in civil-war-torn Yemen is calling on the UK government to stop selling arms to neighbouring Saudi Arabia.
Sherine El Taraboulsi, from the London-based Overseas Development Institute think tank is responding to a report published today (4 May) from UK Parliament’s International Development Committee.
Sherine said: 'The UK must halt its arms sales to Saudi Arabia and join an international effort that calls to account all the different parties to the conflict in Yemen.
'The people of Yemen are suffering staggering losses – both in human life and to the social fabric of their communities.'
The International Development Committee says the UK government’s arms sales to Saudi Arabia undermines its humanitarian aid programme in Yemen and calls on the UK to reconsider its arms sales policy.
Sherine El Taraboulsi is a research fellow with the Overseas Development Institute’s Humanitarian Policy Group.
She is an expert in state formation and ethnic identity in the Middle East – and has looked closely at the situation in Yemen. Her current research is focused on Saudi Arabia’s humanitarian activities.
