Rory Stewart has been appointed the new UK Secretary of State for International Development.
Simon Gill, Acting Executive Director of the Overseas Development Institute, said: ‘Rory Stewart's knowledge and practical experience of development overseas, particularly in countries emerging from conflict, makes him a very welcome appointment.
‘He will lead DFID at a critical time where urgent action is needed to accelerate progress on the Sustainable Development Goals, tackle climate change and focus UK Aid on the poorest people.
‘Without more and better targeted aid, ODI analysis shows that 400 million people will still be living in extreme poverty in 2030. The forthcoming spending review and planned new aid strategy are important opportunities for Stewart to establish his credentials as a global development leader.’
