Dr. Daleep Mukarji OBE becomes Chair of ODI

The Overseas Development Institute is delighted to announce the appointment of Dr. Daleep Mukarji OBE to the post of Chair of the ODI Board and Council.

Dr. Mukarji, who recently retired as the worldwide Director of Christian Aid, said:

"This opportunity is a real privilege for me. I look forward to working with my fellow Board Members, the Director and staff to maintain the outstanding reputation of ODI as an independent think tank. I am eager to work with ODI to – in the words of our mission statement – inspire and inform policy and practice that lead to the reduction of poverty and the alleviation of suffering."

Dr. Mukarji takes over as ODI Chair from Lord Turner, who has served as the Chair of ODI since December 2007 and who will remain on the ODI Council. Lord Turner said:

"Dr Mukarji brings invaluable experience and skills to the role, ranging from his intellectual engagement on development, to his leadership experience and his personal commitment to poverty reduction.  I am certain that he will make a vital contribution to the leadership of this outstanding organisation."

Alison Evans, Director of ODI said:

"I look forward to working closely with Dr. Mukarji. His first-hand, personal and intense understanding of the challenges facing developing countries will be crucial, given a development agenda that is, increasingly, driven by the south."
