Description

Since the Islamic State (IS) seized territory in Iraq in January 2014, over 3.2 million people have been displaced. More than 8 million people are in need of aid, but few international humanitarian organisations are working outside of Kurdistan due to insecurity and a lack of funding.

Described as a protection crisis by the UN, civilians in Iraq have been subjected to mass executions, systematic rape and other shocking acts of violence.

This event charts the rise of IS and examines the effect of political fragmentation on the humanitarian environment. Launching the latest issue of the Humanitarian Exchange on Iraq, speakers will explore the challenges to providing aid and improving protection for civilians caught up in the violent conflict.
