International Centre for Trade and Sustainable Development Dialogues: trade policy, climate change and environmental sustainability
Jodie Keane, research fellow with the International Economic Development Group presented on the implications of the inclusion of the aviation industry in the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) and options for the region to consider. Jodie spoke of the strategic importance of marrying the liberalization of environmental goods and services with a strategy for low carbon competitiveness.
Description
Of specific concern to the Caribbean is the tourism and travel sector as well as export industries and import related consumption that involve the shipment of goods to and from long-distance markets. Caribbean countries are also among the highest trade dependent economies in the world and are therefore highly vulnerable to carbon border measures that would impact on international trade. It is critical, therefore, to look at both the ecological impact of climate change as well as the effects of mitigation and adaptation policies on key economic and trade sectors.
Participants will be introduced to a range of methodological tools and the sessions will involve a mix of presentations, debates and case discussions that allow for critical
and dynamic interchange between and among participants and facilitators.
