Tracing the tourism dollar in Northern Tanzania

This project traces the tourism dollar in the two most important tourism products in Northern Tanzania – mountain climbing on Mount Kilimanjaro and safari game viewing – to understand more clearly who benefits from the large amounts of money tourists are spending in this very poor country. It establishes recent trends in the supply of and demand for tourism services in Northern Tanzania; provides an overview of the mountain climbing on Mount Kilimanjaro and safari game viewing tourist value chains, and examines what aspects and linkages of the existing tourism value chains are susceptible to change and what the developmental effects of these changes are likely to be. The project is funded by the Netherlands Development Organisation (SNV).
