Masters Course in Human Rights and Humanitarian Action - University of Siena

This course, entitled 'Human Rights and Development: experiences and role of non-governamental and civil society organisations', provides an overview of the role and actions of non-governmental and civil society organisations in development and human rights work. This will include some case studies drawn form the work of some leading international agencies. Main themes covered:

- Historical and policy context of the rise of civil society organisations in development and human rights work

-Overview of NGOs approaches and values; human rights and development; advocacy and campaigning

- Main current debates on role of civil society in development and human rights work, including: relationship between civil society organisations , governments, donors and other international players; Role of civil society in influencing policy and holding governments to account: ; Funding dilemmas, role of national and international agencies
