Environmental sustainability within the new development agenda: opportunities and challenges for the civil society

The purpose of this study is to identify the tools that environmental civil society organisations can deploy and the policy positions they can promote in the post-Paris development agenda to ensure that long-term environmental impacts in developing countries benefit both poor people and the environment.   This purpose will be met through addressing the following questions:

  • What opportunities and challenges does the Paris Declaration represent for national environmental sustainability?
  • How can civil society organisations influence the Paris Declaration processes in order to strengthen national environmental governance and hold governments and donors to account?
  • What is the role of donors to support civil society in engaging in these processes, considering many civil society organisations lack capacity and resources?
  • What does southern civil society expect from donors in terms of alignment and harmonisation to ensure it delivers environmentally sustainable development?

Research will be carried out in the following countries: Ghana, Kenya, Tanzania and Pakistan.
