Doing the right thing approximately not the wrong thing precisely: Challenges of monitoring impacts of pro-poor interventions in tourism value chains

This project, funded by the Netherlands Development Organisation (SNV) tackles the challenging question of how to measure impact or success of the value chain approach to boosting participation of the poor in the field of tourism development. It considers what changes in value chain performance or livelihoods of the poor should be measured, and how, and to what extent can value chain analysis alone provide the necessary data. The project draws on lessons learnt to date from a dozen value chain analyses which have been done at the diagnostic and project planning stage and introduced a framework for planning the monitoring of value chain interventions in tourism.
